installation art and design between the cities of Montréal and Toronto. Studio Rat was founded in 2018 as a site for investigations on plastics, inflatables, and community building between artists Dom Di Libero and Emily Allan. The duo creates inflatable dreamscapes from discarded materials that present a commentary on the irreversible binding of plastic in our environments and everyday experience. The expansive nature of pneumatics as medium prompts Studio Rat to think speculatively as they explore what new relations can emerge between plastic, craft and art. Looking to plastic as past, present, and future artefact, Studio Rat positions the material as a curious and amorphous conduit for queer ecological theory and broader systems thinking. At the back-end of our cities is a world of the ad-hoc “where casualness and improvisation shape the use and presence of buildings, and the life that occurs between them.” --David Winslow, 2016 This studio project was designed in response to Toronto’s 2019 by-law amendment which permitted the design and construction of laneway suites within the city’s downtown core. Unnamed Laneway frames the identity of urban laneway networks within future ways of living. This project falls within an experimental and speculative framework, bridging artistic narrative with laneway housing development to increase awareness of the movement’s powerful potential and to promote alleyway-culture’s connection with the future of Toronto’s new laneway housing developments. In the age of condo-ism alternative efforts towards sustainable urban densification and affordable housing are more necessary than ever before. Within Toronto’s urban core exists a challenge of promoting urban densification that counters the current polarization between our heritage neighbourhoods and new high-rise dwellings. Although laneway housing is not a complete solution, it offers a community-oriented approach within mature neighbourhoods that helps to maintain architectural diversity and promote a bottom-up heritage oriented development. Pneu was developed through experimental form-finding and DIY fabrication methods that echo inflatable theory and ideals. Our naivete and novel appreciation for inflatable architecture motivated an creative approach that was completely self-taught.Playing with iridescence and transparency, the contrasting polyethylene and mylar materiality creates a surreal spatial experience. Partygoers loop through a breathing threshold that is blanketed in variations of colour, light, and opacity. Pneu’s central focal point - a reflective mylar column - strategically conceals the fan powering the inflatable whilst cascading light throughout the space with the ebb and flow of air.This project was run through Toronto Metropolitan University’s Design Fabrication Zone with the mentorship of Jonathan Anderson and Vincent Hui. Together they shared project management and full-time design and fabrication responsibilities and provided supplementary promotional videos, promotional and instructional print materials, and a comprehensive set of construction drawings. Their team of 6 members was responsible for the design and fabrication of multi-functional furniture and accessories to be used in a retail setting by pop-up vendors. After retail hours, the furnishings lock away to a configuration that doubles as an off-duty storage system and lounge space for students. Split strives to ‘break the box’ by dividing the volumetric form of a rectangular prism into three different bench modules. Each bench component provides interior storage and display surface area. Friends come together to become a team and build ornate indoor gardens. These same friends are those whose voices guide the listener through the mixtape in various interludes and samples. With the strength of their community behind them, MONEYPHONE launched Faith*’s guerrilla physical and digital campaign. Fans, friends and community members traced the “Indecision Flower” icon around their neighbourhoods one week after release, and a unique Instagram filter allowed fans worldwide to place a virtual version of the flower in their local surroundings. The Faith* MIXTAPE rollout culminated with a billboard located in their own Toronto neighbourhood to celebrate the release.
